Are you mom enough (to breastfeed or not)?

Breastfeeding, being one of the oldest and most natural ways to feed a baby, attracted a lot of attention recently, all thanks to Time Magazine. As a mother who is currently breastfeeding her three-month-old daughter, I even felt “compelled” to blog about it.

From the perspective of a communications professional, this is not exactly a new topic. Attachment parenting style has been known for a long time and some mothers have been breastfeeding their children well beyond their infant years. But of course, Time magazine had a hit this time. Put an attractive pair of mother and son on their cover and bring attention to one of the most controversial topics of breastfeeding – extended breastfeeding. According to nytimes.com, this was the best selling issue this year and the magazine doubled the number of subscriptions typically ordered in a week.

My first reaction to the cover was “Good for the mother and son but this is not for me.” It takes a lot of effort and determination to breastfeed and many mothers do or don’t do it for a variety of reasons. I do it because fortunately I can and I enjoy it. There are also health benefits for the little one when the mother breastfeeds exclusively for the first six months. For the mother, it is one of the best ways to lose weight and I am now even thinner than pre-pregnancy stage.

I breastfed my eldest daughter for about eight months. It helped when the company provided facilities to help mothers who wish to pump milk while at work. I stopped because I was tired and needed to travel. It was just easier to wean then.

I know of mothers who breastfeed their children for more than a year and mothers who don’t breastfeed at all. Both groups have children who are very attached to them. Parenthood is already a tough journey and honestly breastfeeding is just a small component of it. Let’s not be too hard on the mothers who choose to do it or not. It is really a personal choice.

As for my number two, I hope to breastfeed her for at least six months and the rest will depend.

Priceless

BEFORE:

ZZ’s hair was of uneven length, long in the centre as you can see, little at the sides. Daddy suggested giving her a haircut. Mummy was reluctant because she thought he was going to shave her head bald and she would look more like a boy.

PRICE OF GOING TO A PROFESSIONAL WHO SPECIALISES IN CHILDREN’S HAIRCUT: $20

PRICE OF CARING PARENTS WHO GIVE THE HAIRCUT: Priceless

We placed newspapers underneath and gave ZZ her first haircut. Well, technically not the first, because we did cut a little of her hair at her first month for symbolic reason.

This smiley baby was cooperative initially but became impatient when we were half way through.

AFTER:

Shorter & neater hair. She also looked chubbier because there was less hair to cover her cheeks.

The BEST thing about being a parent to a 5-month old baby: You are still her favourite person despite the not so pretty haircut you give her.

Huat birthday

I used to think that I have only one younger sister because I am born in the era of “Stop at Two” (A national birth control policy that was too succesful in the past).

But a bigger contributing factor should be my father. He is a modern man of his times, wanting to allocate more resouces for each child thus the decison to have only two children. More importantly, he thinks that girls are as good, if not better than boys and there is no need to have a son.

So I end up having only one younger sister, a baby sister always.

Her birthday falls on Valentine’s Day. It means one less present and one less special occasion to celebroate every year. Frankly, I am sure it is hard to have a birthday on the same day that many couples in the world celebrate. To share the attention with so many other people.

To make things worse, the first day of the coming Chinese New Year falls on February 14. This means my little sister’s birthday coincides with the most important day of the Chinese calendar.

To cheer her up. I took this photo in humour.

A huat kueh birthday cake.

Sis, happy birthday. Huat ah!

And a Happy Chinese New Year to everyone. Huat ah!

16-4-2009 Person of the week

She captured the attention of the British audience, and then the attention of the media and audiences world wide.

She is 47, single, unemployed and looks like an ordinary ang mo auntie on the streets. Not your usual demographic of an up and coming star.

Her name is Susan Boyle and she shines in the “Britain’s Got Talent” 2009 competition.

I am glad Susan appears at the right place and the right time.

If she is in Asia, she is probably only eligible for singing competitions and shows for the mature singers like “黄金年华”. I am sure many of us remember how 杨宗伟 got disqualified from the Taiwanese singing competition “星光大道” because he said he was younger than his actual age of 29.

For the right timing, reality shows and singing competitions which eliminate contestants based on audiences’ votes, favour contestants like her. I can imagine, if she has gone for an audition to be a professional singer, the people in charge may think that her records won’t sell because of her age, her looks etc etc.

Show producers and audiences love the surprise element in such singing shows. One may expect Susuan to sound really bad, and we may have the next William Hung. On the other hand, she sounds great. We had a pleasant surprise and her powerful singing made the cynical ones among us eat our words.

Susan Boyle, aren’t you glad?

11-4-2009 Weekends

I like to read about what others do during the weekends in the papers. I think I am just naturally kpo.

What do you do during your weekends?

I don’t have the concept of weekends= rest days until I went back to Channel U to read news.

Well, you watch news 24/7 and there must be people producing news during weekends and on public holidays.

In the newsroom, we all take turns to produce news during the weekends, except the news presenters who are separated into the weekday and weekend shifts.

I started off as a weekend news presenter and that meant all weekends “on”.

Then, I started reading on weekdays and having weekends off become a regular feature in my life.

I think the happiest person is my “tall and handsome” who has been like a “single” during the weekends despite signing on the wedding certificate.

When I first started having weekends off, I remembered I was in a big mall and the crowds were pretty scary. I thought I had crowd phobia. haha…

So what do I do during the weekends?

Sleep, watch dvds, cook, exercise, visit my parents, visit my parents-in-laws, meet up with friends, watch movies &

yes, go to the museum 🙂

We went to ACM last Saturday to take a look at Kangxi’s treasures.

Last weekend was a joy except the very last part when someone said something that really annoyed me.

Looking forward to my next weekend…
